Canada Revenue Agency reported on the 2026 tax season after the April 30 filing deadline.
The agency said more than 28.5 million tax returns were filed and 95.6% were filed online.
CRA linked filing to benefit access, including the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The agency said the benefit could provide up to $1,890 for a family of four in the benefit year and up to $950 for a single individual.
CRA said it issued more than $35 billion in refunds, with an average refund of $2,282, and that more than 15 million refunds were deposited directly into taxpayers' bank accounts.
A one-time GST/HST credit top-up payment connected to the transition to the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit was scheduled for June 5, 2026.
CRA also highlighted access programs. More than 480,000 returns were filed through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program from January 1 to March 31, 2026, and SimpleFile supported more than 73,000 returns during the season.
The agency said approximately one million eligible individuals would be invited in March 2027 to review and approve a pre-filled return directly in their CRA account.
The agency also said 6.5 million calls were handled during the tax season, while its Skip the Line content attracted about 174,000 unique visitors.
For taxpayers, the report shows how filing services, automatic filing, and benefit delivery are becoming more closely connected.
