Free Tax Clinics

CRA said 18,090 volunteers helped 857,000 people file more than 980,000 returns, producing over $2.3 billion in benefits and credits.

Canada Revenue Agency reminded taxpayers that free tax help may be available through community tax clinics.

The program is aimed at people with modest income and simple tax situations. CRA's tax-tip examples referred to income thresholds such as $35,000 for one person and $45,000 for two people.

CRA said volunteers can help with the current tax year and can also help file returns going back up to 10 years.

The scale is significant. In the prior year, 18,090 volunteers supported 3,520 organizations that hosted free tax clinics.

Those volunteers submitted more than 980,000 tax returns and served more than 857,000 people.

CRA said the clinic work resulted in more than $2.3 billion in benefit and credit payments.

The reminder matters because filing a return is often the gateway to credits and benefits, including the Canada Child Benefit and the GST/HST credit.

For low-income taxpayers, the value of filing can be much larger than the refund shown on a return. It can also start or preserve benefit payments that depend on up-to-date income information.
