Volunteer Tax Credits Increased

Budget 2024 proposed doubling the volunteer firefighter and search-and-rescue tax-credit amounts from $3,000 to $6,000.

Department of Finance Canada said Budget 2024 proposed higher tax credits for volunteer firefighters and search-and-rescue volunteers.

The proposal would double the Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit and the Search and Rescue Volunteers Tax Credit from $3,000 to $6,000.

Finance Canada said the change would provide up to $450 more in tax relief for eligible volunteers.

Budget 2024 also included an additional $800,000 for wildfire fighting capacity and enhanced training through the International Association of Fire Fighters.

For eligible volunteers, the practical effect depends on meeting the service requirements and claiming the credit for the relevant tax year.
