Statistics Canada reported that 183,921 new motor vehicles were sold in Canada in April 2026, down 6.0% from April 2025.
The dollar value of new motor vehicle sales also declined, but by less than the unit count. Sales measured in dollars fell 1.7% from a year earlier, suggesting that average prices, vehicle mix, or both helped cushion the drop in unit sales.
The decline was broad across vehicle types. New truck sales fell 6.4% from April 2025, while new passenger car sales fell 2.7%.
Zero-emission vehicles moved in the opposite direction. Statistics Canada said 17,795 new zero-emission vehicles were sold in April, up 21.2% from a year earlier.
Zero-emission vehicles accounted for 9.7% of total new motor vehicles sold, compared with 7.5% in April 2025. Statistics Canada defines the category as vehicles with the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions, including battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
