Canada Revenue Agency published tax-season guidance for adults aged 65 and older.
CRA said filing a return is the first step to receiving benefits and credits that may put money back in a taxpayer's pocket.
The guidance referred to the GST/HST credit, a tax-free quarterly payment for people with low and modest incomes that may include related provincial or territorial amounts.
CRA also highlighted housing-related relief. Eligible taxpayers may claim up to $7,500 in qualifying renovation costs to add a secondary unit for a senior or an adult with a disability.
The general filing deadline for most individuals was April 30, 2025. Self-employed taxpayers and taxpayers with a self-employed spouse or common-law partner had a June 16, 2025 filing deadline because June 15 fell on a Sunday.
The value of the reminder is coordination. Older adults may have pension income, credits, housing expenses, disability-related costs, and benefit eligibility all connected through the annual return.
A timely return can preserve payments and reduce delays, even where the taxpayer expects little tax payable.
