The Canada Revenue Agency reminded taxpayers about changes to how tax preparers obtain access to individual CRA information.
As of July 15, 2025, tax preparers can no longer request authorization for individual clients through EFILE. CRA said authorization requests for individuals must now be submitted through Represent a Client.
Taxpayers can authorize a representative through their CRA account. CRA also said taxpayers may provide information from a notice of assessment received at least six months earlier so the preparer can request authorization securely through an alternative process.
The change does not affect business clients. CRA framed the change as part of improvements to make authorization faster, easier, and more secure for individuals who use a preparer.
For taxpayers who rely on paid or volunteer help, the practical step is to confirm CRA account access or keep a recent notice of assessment available before the return is prepared.
