Department of Finance Canada said tax-break legislation received Royal Assent.
The legislation removed the GST/HST from holiday essentials, including groceries, restaurant meals, drinks, snacks, children's clothing, and gifts, from December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025.
Finance Canada described the measure as a temporary two-month tax break for Canadians.
The relief applied only to listed categories during the eligible period, so retailers and consumers still had to distinguish covered goods from ordinary taxable purchases.
