Department of Finance Canada said the federal government announced a temporary GST/HST holiday and short-term rental measures.
The temporary tax break applied to qualifying goods such as restaurant meals, children's clothing, toys, diapers, books, snacks, and other listed items over a two-month period.
Finance Canada gave an example of a family spending $2,000 on qualifying goods and paying $100 less GST during the relief period.
Federal support was also directed to municipal governments and Indigenous communities enforcing restrictions on non-compliant short-term rentals.
For households and renters, the measures connected temporary sales-tax relief with housing-supply enforcement aimed at keeping more units in long-term use.
