Tariff Relief for Businesses

Finance Canada extended tariff exemptions for selected U.S. goods used in manufacturing, processing, food packaging, agriculture, health, safety, and security.

Department of Finance Canada announced relief for Canadian businesses affected by Canada's countermeasures responding to U.S. tariffs.

The existing exemption for U.S. goods used in manufacturing, processing, or food and beverage packaging was extended for two months.

The exemption was also expanded to include goods used in agricultural production.

A temporary exemption for U.S. goods used to support public health, health care, public safety, and national security objectives was also extended for two months.

Finance Canada said additional relief from tariffs on imports from the United States and China had been implemented for companies meeting strict conditions, such as short supply or existing contractual obligations.

The release also pointed to automatic tariff waivers under Chapters 98 and 99 of the Customs Tariff for specified commercial and non-commercial uses, except for steel products.

Companies may also apply for the Canada Border Services Agency Duties Relief Program and Duty Drawback Program to import commercial goods without paying tariffs or to receive refunds where goods are eventually exported.

The relief affects cash flow and landed costs for businesses that import covered goods, especially where tariffs apply before products are processed, incorporated into exports, or used in protected sectors.
