Newcomer First Tax Return

CRA reminded newcomers that filing a first Canadian return can unlock GST/HST credit, Canada Child Benefit, and related payments.

Canada Revenue Agency published guidance for newcomers filing a Canadian tax return for the first time.

The agency said filing an income-tax and benefit return is important because it can start or continue benefit and credit payments.

Newcomers may be able to receive payments such as the GST/HST credit and other federal, provincial, or territorial benefits.

CRA also noted that benefit and credit payments can begin after arrival in Canada, even before a first tax return is filed, if the proper application is made.

Filing on time remains important after that first application. Annual returns update income and family information, which affects ongoing benefit eligibility.

The guidance also reminded newcomers that deductions, credits, and expenses may reduce tax payable when filing.

The article belongs in personal tax because arrival in Canada often creates both filing obligations and benefit opportunities. Missing the first return can delay credits even where little or no tax is owing.
