Journalism Labour Tax Credit Consultation

Finance Canada asked for comments by July 31, 2026 on extending the Canadian Journalism Labour Tax Credit to audio and audiovisual news production.

Department of Finance Canada opened consultations on extending the Canadian Journalism Labour Tax Credit to audio and audiovisual news production.

The proposal was announced in the 2026 Spring Economic Update, and Finance Canada said it intended to move forward with the extension after receiving input on design.

The Canadian Journalism Labour Tax Credit was introduced in Budget 2019 as part of a package of tax measures to support Canadian journalism.

The credit provides qualifying journalism organizations with a refundable tax credit on salary or wages paid to eligible newsroom employees.

Under the current credit, labour expenditures are capped at $85,000 per eligible employee for a tax year, producing a credit of up to $29,750 per individual.

The consultation asks how to adapt the credit to audio and audiovisual news production, where newsroom roles, eligible labour, and production structures may differ from written journalism.

Stakeholders and interested Canadians were asked to submit comments by July 31, 2026.
