DTC Application Rules Updated

The CRA says two summer changes will affect how disability tax credit applications and older Form T2201 versions are handled.

The Canada Revenue Agency said it is updating the disability tax credit application process this summer, with changes aimed at moving applicants toward the current online form and reducing delays caused by incomplete or outdated submissions.

The first change starts July 14, 2026. From that date, applicants will no longer be able to use the "submit documents" section of a CRA account to send new disability tax credit applications or related documents, unless the CRA specifically asks for more information on an existing file.

The second change starts September 8, 2026. The CRA said older versions of Form T2201 from before 2023 will no longer be accepted. Applicants using the paper route will need to make sure the form is the current version before mailing it to a CRA tax centre.

The CRA is encouraging applicants to use the online disability tax credit application form through their CRA account. The agency says the online version is kept up to date, guides applicants through the sections that apply to them, and can help avoid missing information.

The disability tax credit is a non-refundable tax credit for people with severe and prolonged impairments, or for supporting family members in some cases. Approval can also matter beyond the credit itself, because DTC eligibility may affect access to other federal, provincial, or territorial disability-related programs and benefits.

Applicants preparing a new claim should avoid relying on the general document-upload tool after July 14, and anyone using paper should check the form version before the September deadline.
