The Canada Revenue Agency said it will permanently close all drop boxes at 45 locations across Canada after the 2026 tax filing season.
The closure takes effect on May 29, 2026. CRA said documents would be accepted through drop boxes until the end of the day on May 28, after the April 30 filing deadline, to reduce disruption during tax season.
CRA cited declining use, processing delays, and security concerns. Between 2018-2019 and 2024-2025, the number of items submitted through drop boxes fell by 78 per cent, from nearly 2 million items to just over 430,000.
The agency said items placed in drop boxes must be transported to the appropriate processing location, which can take longer than online submission or other electronic methods.
CRA also cited security risks, including break-ins, vandalism, and suspicious packages.
Taxpayers who still file or send documents on paper will need to use regular mail after the closure. CRA pointed to Canada Post network of more than 5,700 post offices as one alternative.
CRA said it received more than 33 million returns last filing season and that 93 per cent were filed online. The drop-box decision is part of that broader shift away from physical submission channels.
