Department of Finance Canada opened consultations on possible changes to Canada's automotive tariff remission framework.
The consultation concerns surtaxes that apply to passenger vehicles made in the United States. Finance Canada said vehicle assemblers, parts producers, importers, worker associations, unions, and other interested parties can submit comments by April 13, 2026.
The department connected the consultation to the federal auto strategy announced on February 5, 2026. That strategy was framed around made-in-Canada vehicle production, electric-vehicle manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and other technology used in next-generation vehicles.
Finance Canada said the auto sector supports more than 500,000 workers and contributes more than $16 billion annually to Canada's GDP. Canada produced more than 1.2 million passenger vehicles in 2025.
The issue is how tariff remission should be used. The consultation asks whether relief from surtaxes should be tied more directly to production and investment in Canada, rather than operating only as a trade-relief measure.
