The Canada Revenue Agency issued a final reminder before the April 30, 2026 deadline for most individuals to file their 2025 income tax and benefit return.
CRA said more than 16.1 million income tax and benefit returns had already been filed as of April 12, 2026.
Online filing continued to dominate the season. More than 15.4 million returns had been filed through certified tax software by that date.
CRA also highlighted SimpleFile, saying more than 55,000 returns had been filed through the service during the year. SimpleFile is aimed at making filing easier for eligible people with simpler tax situations.
The agency said more than 9.9 million refunds had already been issued before the deadline, totalling $22.2 billion.
The reminder was not only about penalties. Filing on time keeps income information current for CRA-administered benefits and credits, including payments that depend on the most recent assessed return.
Late or missing returns can delay refunds, benefit payments, credits, and CRA account updates even where a taxpayer expects money back rather than a balance owing.
